The red kangaroo is the largest marsupial in the world and lives in the dry plains and deserts of mainland Australia. Large males can stand over five feet tall.

Kangaroos hop on powerful back legs and use their thick tails for balance and support.

Amazing Facts

A red kangaroo can cover about 25 feet in a single bound and reach speeds over 35 miles per hour. Joeys are born tiny and finish developing in the mother’s pouch.

Desert Survival

Red kangaroos rest in the shade during the heat of the day and graze in the cooler hours, getting much of their water from the plants they eat.

Watch Responsibly

Whether you are on safari, in a national park, or at an Ohio zoo, give wild animals space, follow posted rules, and never feed wildlife. Supporting accredited zoos and conservation groups helps protect these animals and their habitats for future generations.
