The American black bear is the most common bear in North America. Despite the name, black bears can be black, brown, cinnamon, or even blond.
Black bears disappeared from Ohio by the mid 1800s, but young bears from neighboring states have been wandering back, especially into eastern and northeastern Ohio, where they are a protected species.
Amazing Facts
Black bears are excellent tree climbers and eat mostly plants, nuts, berries, and insects. They have a keen sense of smell.
Safety Tip
If bears visit your area, take down bird feeders, secure trash, and never feed a bear. Report sightings to the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
Watch Responsibly
Whether you are on safari, in a national park, or at an Ohio zoo, give wild animals space, follow posted rules, and never feed wildlife. Supporting accredited zoos and conservation groups helps protect these animals and their habitats for future generations.
