The African savanna elephant is the largest land animal on Earth. Adult males can stand about 10 to 13 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh up to around six tons. Elephants live across parts of sub Saharan Africa, from open grasslands to woodlands.

Herds are led by an older female called the matriarch, whose memory of water sources and safe routes helps the whole family survive dry seasons.

Amazing Facts

An elephant’s trunk contains tens of thousands of muscles and can pick up a single blade of grass or pull down a tree branch. Their large ears help release body heat, and they communicate with low rumbles that can travel for miles.

Conservation

Ivory poaching and habitat loss have reduced elephant numbers, and the savanna elephant is listed as endangered. Protected parks and anti poaching patrols are key to their future.

Watch Responsibly

Whether you are on safari, in a national park, or at an Ohio zoo, give wild animals space, follow posted rules, and never feed wildlife. Supporting accredited zoos and conservation groups helps protect these animals and their habitats for future generations.
