The American bison is the heaviest land animal in North America, with bulls weighing up to about 2,000 pounds. Tens of millions once roamed the continent, but by the late 1800s hunting had nearly wiped them out.

Conservation efforts saved the species, and bison now live in parks, preserves, and on private ranches.

Amazing Facts

Despite their size, bison can run about 35 miles per hour and jump fences. In 2016 the bison was named the national mammal of the United States.

Where to See Them

Yellowstone National Park has one of the most famous wild herds. Always stay at least 25 yards away, as bison injure visitors who get too close.

Watch Responsibly

Whether you are on safari, in a national park, or at an Ohio zoo, give wild animals space, follow posted rules, and never feed wildlife. Supporting accredited zoos and conservation groups helps protect these animals and their habitats for future generations.
