Male Mallards have glossy green heads, white neck rings, and chestnut chests. Females are mottled brown with an orange and brown bill.

Mallards are dabbling ducks that tip forward to feed on plants and insects underwater. They live on almost any body of water, from city ponds to marshes.

Where to See It

Ponds, lakes, rivers, and wetlands in every part of Ohio.

Birding Tip

Avoid feeding ducks bread, which offers poor nutrition. Leave them to forage naturally.

Fun Fact

Many domestic duck breeds are descended from wild Mallards.

Help Birds Thrive

Native plants, clean water, and a few safe places to shelter make any yard more welcoming to birds. Keep feeders clean, place them away from windows, and keep cats indoors to protect local wildlife.
