The Northern Cardinal has been Ohio’s state bird since 1933. Males are brilliant red with a black mask, while females are warm tan with red touches on the wings, tail, and crest.

Cardinals stay in Ohio all year and love sunflower and safflower seeds. Pairs often stay together through the seasons, and both males and females sing.

Where to See It

Backyards with feeders and shrubs, parks, and woodland edges across Ohio, especially at dawn and dusk.

Fun Fact

Male cardinals often feed seeds to females during courtship, a behavior that looks like a kiss.

Help Birds Thrive

Native plants, clean water, and a few safe places to shelter make any yard more welcoming to birds. Keep feeders clean, place them away from windows, and keep cats indoors to protect local wildlife.
