Male Eastern Bluebirds have brilliant blue backs and rusty orange chests, while females show softer colors.

Bluebirds eat insects and berries and nest in tree cavities. Their numbers recovered thanks in large part to volunteers who put up bluebird nest boxes.

Where to See It

Open fields, golf courses, orchards, and parks with nest boxes.

Birding Tip

Mount a nest box on a post in an open area facing away from prevailing winds.

Fun Fact

Bluebirds often perch on fence posts or wires before dropping to the ground to catch insects.

Help Birds Thrive

Native plants, clean water, and a few safe places to shelter make any yard more welcoming to birds. Keep feeders clean, place them away from windows, and keep cats indoors to protect local wildlife.
