Common Grackles look black from a distance but shine with purple, blue, and bronze colors up close. They have bright yellow eyes and long tails.

Grackles eat almost anything, from seeds and insects to small animals. They often travel in large, noisy flocks.

Where to See It

Lawns, parks, farm fields, and marshes, often in big flocks.

Birding Tip

Offer feeders with small perches or cages if you want to limit large flocks at feeders.

Fun Fact

Grackles sometimes rub ants on their feathers, a behavior called anting.

Help Birds Thrive

Native plants, clean water, and a few safe places to shelter make any yard more welcoming to birds. Keep feeders clean, place them away from windows, and keep cats indoors to protect local wildlife.
