Canada Geese are large waterbirds with black heads and necks and a distinctive white chin strap.

They graze on grass and aquatic plants. Many geese now live in Ohio all year, while others migrate, flying in the famous V formation.

Where to See It

Lakes, ponds, parks, and farm fields throughout Ohio.

Birding Tip

Keep a respectful distance during nesting season, when geese defend their nests strongly.

Fun Fact

Flying in a V formation helps geese save energy by reducing wind resistance for the birds behind the leader.

Help Birds Thrive

Native plants, clean water, and a few safe places to shelter make any yard more welcoming to birds. Keep feeders clean, place them away from windows, and keep cats indoors to protect local wildlife.
