Cardiac arrest happens when the heart suddenly stops pumping blood.

The person collapses, does not respond and is not breathing normally, or is only gasping. Gasping is not normal breathing.

Pin Tip

Tap the person and shout. If there is no response and no normal breathing, call 911 and start CPR immediately.

Heart Attack Is Different

A heart attack is a blockage of blood flow to the heart. The person is usually awake, but it can lead to cardiac arrest, so call 911 right away.

Get Trained

This pin is for general education only and does not replace hands on training. Take a certified CPR and first aid course from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association, and always call 911 in an emergency.
