The Japanese Bobtail has lived in Japan for centuries. Its short, fluffy tail looks like a pom pom, and no two tails are exactly alike.

Japanese Bobtails are active, chatty, and smart. Calico cats called mi ke are especially prized in Japan.

Care Tips

Provide toys and climbing space, and brush weekly. Handle the tail gently.

Fun Fact

The famous maneki neko, or beckoning cat figurine seen in shops and restaurants, is often modeled after a Japanese Bobtail.

Is This Breed Right for You?

Every cat is an individual, so meet the cat before you decide. Think about your schedule, grooming time, other pets, and children in the home. Breed rescues and Ohio shelters often have purebred and mixed breed cats waiting for homes, and adult cats come with personalities you can see right away.

Health Basics

Schedule a checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask your veterinarian about health issues common to the breed. Responsible breeders should share health screening results and welcome your questions.

Save this pin to your cat lovers board and share it with a fellow cat fan. Thinking about a new cat? Check Ohio shelters and rescues too.
