The Selkirk Rex began in 1987 in Sheridan, Wyoming, with a curly coated kitten born at a pet rescue.
Selkirks are large, sturdy cats with plush curly coats in short and long versions. They are patient, cuddly, and laid back.
Care Tips
Comb gently to avoid stretching the curls, and bathe occasionally. Curls can change as kittens mature.
Fun Fact
The Selkirk Rex is one of the few rex breeds with a thick, plush coat rather than a fine one.
Is This Breed Right for You?
Every cat is an individual, so meet the cat before you decide. Think about your schedule, grooming time, other pets, and children in the home. Breed rescues and Ohio shelters often have purebred and mixed breed cats waiting for homes, and adult cats come with personalities you can see right away.
Health Basics
Schedule a checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask your veterinarian about health issues common to the breed. Responsible breeders should share health screening results and welcome your questions.
