The American Curl began with a stray named Shulamith found in Lakewood, California, in 1981. Her unusual ears curled backward, and her kittens inherited the trait.
Curl kittens are born with straight ears that begin to curl within a few days. The breed is friendly, people oriented, and stays playful well into adulthood.
Care Tips
Handle the ears gently, since the cartilage is firm. Weekly brushing is enough for both short and long coats.
Fun Fact
The degree of curl varies from a slight bend to a full crescent, and show cats are judged on the shape.
Is This Breed Right for You?
Every cat is an individual, so meet the cat before you decide. Think about your schedule, grooming time, other pets, and children in the home. Breed rescues and Ohio shelters often have purebred and mixed breed cats waiting for homes, and adult cats come with personalities you can see right away.
Health Basics
Schedule a checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask your veterinarian about health issues common to the breed. Responsible breeders should share health screening results and welcome your questions.
