The Bombay was developed in Louisville, Kentucky, in the 1950s by breeder Nikki Horner, who crossed sable Burmese with black American Shorthairs.
Her goal was a cat that looked like a miniature black panther. Bombays have glossy black coats, copper or gold eyes, and very people oriented personalities.
Care Tips
The short coat needs little care, and a quick rub with a soft cloth brings out the shine. Bombays crave attention and warmth.
Fun Fact
Bombays are sometimes called parlor panthers because of their sleek black look and love of lounging indoors.
Is This Breed Right for You?
Every cat is an individual, so meet the cat before you decide. Think about your schedule, grooming time, other pets, and children in the home. Breed rescues and Ohio shelters often have purebred and mixed breed cats waiting for homes, and adult cats come with personalities you can see right away.
Health Basics
Schedule a checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask your veterinarian about health issues common to the breed. Responsible breeders should share health screening results and welcome your questions.
