USS Nautilus was the world’s first nuclear powered submarine, commissioned in 1954. Nuclear power let it stay submerged far longer than earlier diesel electric subs.

On August 3, 1958, Nautilus became the first vessel to travel under the ice to the North Pole.

Leadership

The program was driven by Admiral Hyman Rickover, often called the father of the nuclear Navy.

Visit

Nautilus is preserved at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, Connecticut, where visitors can walk through its compartments.

See It in Person

Ohio is a great place to see military history up close. The National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton is free and displays hundreds of aircraft, and local veterans memorials, county historical societies, and VFW and American Legion posts across the state often display vehicles and artifacts. Thank a veteran when you visit.
