The Bell UH1 Iroquois, known to everyone as the Huey, was the signature helicopter of the Vietnam War.

Hueys carried troops into landing zones, delivered supplies, and evacuated wounded soldiers to field hospitals in medevac missions often called dustoffs.

Lifesaver

Fast helicopter evacuation helped improve survival rates for wounded troops compared with earlier wars.

Legacy

The distinctive sound of its rotor blades is instantly familiar to many veterans, and Hueys remain on display at museums and veterans memorials across Ohio and the country.

See It in Person

Ohio is a great place to see military history up close. The National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton is free and displays hundreds of aircraft, and local veterans memorials, county historical societies, and VFW and American Legion posts across the state often display vehicles and artifacts. Thank a veteran when you visit.
