The Turkish Van comes from the Lake Van region of eastern Turkey. It is famous for enjoying water, earning it the nickname the swimming cat.

The classic van pattern is a white body with color on the head and tail. Its water resistant coat feels like cashmere.

Care Tips

Vans are energetic and strong, so provide climbing space and play. Brush weekly.

Fun Fact

Even the name van pattern, used for other cats with this coloring, comes from this breed.

Is This Breed Right for You?

Every cat is an individual, so meet the cat before you decide. Think about your schedule, grooming time, other pets, and children in the home. Breed rescues and Ohio shelters often have purebred and mixed breed cats waiting for homes, and adult cats come with personalities you can see right away.

Health Basics

Schedule a checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask your veterinarian about health issues common to the breed. Responsible breeders should share health screening results and welcome your questions.

Save this pin to your cat lovers board and share it with a fellow cat fan. Thinking about a new cat? Check Ohio shelters and rescues too.
