The British Shorthair is one of England’s oldest breeds, descended from street and farm cats of Great Britain. The blue gray British Blue is its most famous color.
These round faced cats have dense, plush coats and copper eyes. They are calm, dignified, and independent, enjoying company without constant handling.
Care Tips
Brush weekly, more often during seasonal shedding. British Shorthairs mature slowly and may not reach full size until about age three.
Fun Fact
British Shorthairs became one of the first breeds shown at England’s early cat shows in the late 1800s.
Is This Breed Right for You?
Every cat is an individual, so meet the cat before you decide. Think about your schedule, grooming time, other pets, and children in the home. Breed rescues and Ohio shelters often have purebred and mixed breed cats waiting for homes, and adult cats come with personalities you can see right away.
Health Basics
Schedule a checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask your veterinarian about health issues common to the breed. Responsible breeders should share health screening results and welcome your questions.
