The Norwegian Forest Cat, known in Norway as the skogkatt, developed naturally in Scandinavia’s cold forests. King Olav V named it Norway’s national cat.

It has a thick, water resistant double coat, a bushy tail, and strong legs for climbing. Wegies are friendly, calm, and athletic.

Care Tips

Brush weekly and more often in spring when the winter coat sheds. Provide tall cat trees.

Fun Fact

In Norse mythology, the goddess Freya’s chariot was pulled by large cats often linked to this breed.

Is This Breed Right for You?

Every cat is an individual, so meet the cat before you decide. Think about your schedule, grooming time, other pets, and children in the home. Breed rescues and Ohio shelters often have purebred and mixed breed cats waiting for homes, and adult cats come with personalities you can see right away.

Health Basics

Schedule a checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask your veterinarian about health issues common to the breed. Responsible breeders should share health screening results and welcome your questions.

Save this pin to your cat lovers board and share it with a fellow cat fan. Thinking about a new cat? Check Ohio shelters and rescues too.
