The Abyssinian is one of the oldest known cat breeds. It is named after Abyssinia, now Ethiopia, though researchers believe its ancestors may trace to coastal Southeast Asia or the Indian Ocean region.
Its short ticked coat, with bands of color on each hair, gives it a warm, glowing look. Abyssinians are active, curious, and love to climb to the highest spot in the room.
Care Tips
Provide climbing trees, puzzle toys, and daily play. The short coat needs only a weekly brushing.
Fun Fact
Abyssinians are often called the clowns of the cat world because they are so playful and inquisitive.
Is This Breed Right for You?
Every cat is an individual, so meet the cat before you decide. Think about your schedule, grooming time, other pets, and children in the home. Breed rescues and Ohio shelters often have purebred and mixed breed cats waiting for homes, and adult cats come with personalities you can see right away.
Health Basics
Schedule a checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask your veterinarian about health issues common to the breed. Responsible breeders should share health screening results and welcome your questions.
