Clara Barton was a former teacher and federal clerk who began delivering supplies and caring for wounded soldiers early in the Civil War.

At Antietam she worked near the front lines, earning the nickname Angel of the Battlefield.

Finding the Missing

After the war she ran an office that helped families locate missing soldiers and helped identify and mark graves at Andersonville prison in Georgia.

Red Cross Founder

In 1881 Barton founded the American Red Cross and led it for more than two decades.
