The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1 to 3, 1863, in and around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was the largest battle of the war, with about 51,000 casualties.
On the final day, the Confederate assault known as Pickett’s Charge failed against the Union center on Cemetery Ridge.
Turning Point
Lee’s defeat ended his second invasion of the North. Combined with Vicksburg’s surrender the next day, it marked a turning point in the war.
