Harriet Tubman escaped slavery in Maryland in 1849 and returned many times to lead family members and others to freedom on the Underground Railroad.
During the Civil War she worked for the Union Army as a nurse, scout, and spy in South Carolina.
Combahee River Raid
In June 1863 she helped guide the Combahee River Raid, which freed more than 700 enslaved people, making her one of the first women to lead an armed operation in the war.
Ohio Connection
Ohio was home to many Underground Railroad routes, and museums in Cincinnati and elsewhere honor the freedom seekers and helpers Tubman represented.
