The Bald Eagle is the national bird of the United States, known for its white head, yellow beak, and powerful wings. Young eagles are mostly brown and gain their white head at around five years old.

Eagles eat mostly fish and nest near lakes and rivers. After declining sharply in the twentieth century, they have made a remarkable comeback, including in Ohio.

Where to See It

Lake Erie marshes, large reservoirs, and rivers, especially in winter when eagles gather near open water.

Fun Fact

Eagle nests can be enormous, sometimes growing to several feet across as pairs add sticks year after year.

Help Birds Thrive

Native plants, clean water, and a few safe places to shelter make any yard more welcoming to birds. Keep feeders clean, place them away from windows, and keep cats indoors to protect local wildlife.
