A person who cannot cough, speak or breathe may be choking and needs help right away.

Stand behind them, make a fist above the navel, grasp it with your other hand and give quick inward and upward abdominal thrusts until the object comes out.

Pin Tip

If the person becomes unresponsive, lower them to the ground, call 911 and begin CPR.

If You Are Alone

You can give yourself abdominal thrusts using your fist or by pressing your upper abdomen against the back of a chair.

Get Trained

This pin is for general education only and does not replace hands on training. Take a certified CPR and first aid course from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association, and always call 911 in an emergency.
