The Ocicat was created by accident in 1964 when Michigan breeder Virginia Daly crossed an Abyssinian and a Siamese and produced a spotted kitten.
Although it looks like a small wild cat and is named after the ocelot, the Ocicat has no wild ancestry. It is outgoing, smart, and easy to train.
Care Tips
Ocicats enjoy fetch, leash walks, and puzzle toys. The short coat needs only weekly brushing.
Fun Fact
Michigan is the birthplace of the breed, making it a Midwest original.
Is This Breed Right for You?
Every cat is an individual, so meet the cat before you decide. Think about your schedule, grooming time, other pets, and children in the home. Breed rescues and Ohio shelters often have purebred and mixed breed cats waiting for homes, and adult cats come with personalities you can see right away.
Health Basics
Schedule a checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask your veterinarian about health issues common to the breed. Responsible breeders should share health screening results and welcome your questions.
