The Maine Coon is one of the largest domestic cat breeds and is the official state cat of Maine. It developed naturally in New England’s harsh winters.
Maine Coons have shaggy, water resistant coats, tufted ears, and big bushy tails. Known as gentle giants, they are friendly and good with families.
Care Tips
Brush two or three times a week. Maine Coons mature slowly and may keep growing until age four or five.
Fun Fact
A Maine Coon named Cosie won best in show at an early cat show at Madison Square Garden in 1895.
Is This Breed Right for You?
Every cat is an individual, so meet the cat before you decide. Think about your schedule, grooming time, other pets, and children in the home. Breed rescues and Ohio shelters often have purebred and mixed breed cats waiting for homes, and adult cats come with personalities you can see right away.
Health Basics
Schedule a checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask your veterinarian about health issues common to the breed. Responsible breeders should share health screening results and welcome your questions.
