The Exotic Shorthair was developed in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s by crossing Persians with shorthaired breeds such as the American Shorthair.
It has the Persian’s sweet flat face and calm nature but a short, plush coat that is much easier to maintain.
Care Tips
Brush weekly and clean around the eyes daily. Because of the flat face, watch for breathing issues and keep them cool in hot weather.
Fun Fact
Fans often call the Exotic the lazy person’s Persian because it needs so much less grooming.
Is This Breed Right for You?
Every cat is an individual, so meet the cat before you decide. Think about your schedule, grooming time, other pets, and children in the home. Breed rescues and Ohio shelters often have purebred and mixed breed cats waiting for homes, and adult cats come with personalities you can see right away.
Health Basics
Schedule a checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask your veterinarian about health issues common to the breed. Responsible breeders should share health screening results and welcome your questions.
