The Birman is often called the Sacred Cat of Burma, thanks to a legend about temple cats. The breed as we know it was developed in France in the early 1900s.
Birmans have a colorpoint pattern, deep blue eyes, a silky semi long coat, and four white paws called gloves. They are gentle, quiet, and affectionate.
Care Tips
Their coat resists matting, so a weekly comb is usually enough. Birmans do best with regular company.
Fun Fact
Every Birman has white gloves on all four feet, and show judges look for even, symmetrical markings.
Is This Breed Right for You?
Every cat is an individual, so meet the cat before you decide. Think about your schedule, grooming time, other pets, and children in the home. Breed rescues and Ohio shelters often have purebred and mixed breed cats waiting for homes, and adult cats come with personalities you can see right away.
Health Basics
Schedule a checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask your veterinarian about health issues common to the breed. Responsible breeders should share health screening results and welcome your questions.
