The Lockheed SR71 Blackbird was a reconnaissance aircraft that flew faster than three times the speed of sound and higher than 80,000 feet.
It was developed by Lockheed’s Skunk Works under engineer Kelly Johnson and first flew in 1964.
Amazing Facts
The aircraft was built largely from titanium to handle the heat of high speed flight. It still holds speed records for jet powered aircraft.

The Blackbird was retired in the 1990s, and one is displayed at the National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton.
