The Supermarine Spitfire was a British fighter plane designed by R. J. Mitchell. Its elliptical wings gave it a graceful look and excellent handling.

Along with the Hawker Hurricane, the Spitfire defended Britain against German air attacks during the Battle of Britain in 1940.

Constant Upgrades

The design was improved throughout the war, with more powerful engines and new roles such as photo reconnaissance.

Legacy

The Spitfire became a symbol of British resilience, and restored examples still fly at air shows around the world.

See It in Person

Ohio is a great place to see military history up close. The National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton is free and displays hundreds of aircraft, and local veterans memorials, county historical societies, and VFW and American Legion posts across the state often display vehicles and artifacts. Thank a veteran when you visit.
