Polar bears live around the Arctic Ocean and are considered marine mammals because they depend on sea ice. They hunt mainly seals, waiting at breathing holes or along the ice edge.

Their fur looks white, but each hair is actually clear and hollow, and their skin underneath is black to absorb heat.

Amazing Facts

Polar bears are powerful swimmers and can cover long distances between ice floes. Adult males are among the largest land carnivores, sometimes weighing over 1,000 pounds.

Ohio Connection

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and the Toledo Zoo both have polar bear exhibits, and the species is listed as vulnerable due to shrinking sea ice.

Watch Responsibly

Whether you are on safari, in a national park, or at an Ohio zoo, give wild animals space, follow posted rules, and never feed wildlife. Supporting accredited zoos and conservation groups helps protect these animals and their habitats for future generations.
