The gray wolf is the largest wild member of the dog family. Wolves live in packs, usually a breeding pair and their offspring, and hunt together for prey such as elk, deer, and moose.
Gray wolves once ranged across most of North America, including Ohio, but were eliminated from many states by the early 1900s.
Amazing Facts
A wolf’s howl helps pack members find each other and warns other packs to stay away. Wolves can travel dozens of miles in a day while hunting.
Comeback Story
Wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park in 1995 and 1996, and researchers have studied how their return affected elk, rivers, and plant life in the park.
