In the Old West, governments, railroads, and express companies offered rewards for the capture of outlaws. Printed notices helped spread the word across towns and territories.

In 1881 Missouri Governor Thomas Crittenden announced a large reward for Jesse James and his brother Frank. The image above is an example of an Old West style wanted poster.

How Rewards Worked

Rewards attracted lawmen, private detectives, and civilians, but they also led to mistaken identities and danger, one reason modern fugitive recovery is regulated.

Safety Note

Never approach a wanted person yourself. If you have information about a fugitive, contact law enforcement. Learn more about fugitive recovery history and public bulletins at FugitiveHQ.
