Tom Horn (1860 to 1903) worked as an Army scout during the Apache Wars, then as a Pinkerton detective and a stock detective for cattle interests in Wyoming.
In 1903 Horn was convicted of murdering a teenage boy and was hanged in Cheyenne. Historians still debate the evidence in his case. The photo above shows Cheyenne, Wyoming around the time of his trial.
Why He Is Remembered
Horn’s life shows how blurry the line between lawman and hired gun could be on the frontier, and why modern investigations depend on clear rules and accountability.
