The Yorkshire Terrier was developed in northern England in the 1800s to catch rats in mills and mines.

Yorkies are tiny but bold, with long silky coats of blue and tan. They are affectionate and lively.

Care Tips

Brush daily if the coat is kept long, or keep it trimmed short. Watch dental health.

Fun Fact

A Yorkie named Smoky served with American troops in World War II and later visited hospitals as a therapy dog.

Is This Breed Right for You?

Before bringing home any dog, think about your space, schedule, budget, and activity level. Meet the dog in person, ask about energy and grooming needs, and consider an adult dog whose personality is already known. Ohio shelters and breed rescues often have purebred dogs and loving mixes waiting for homes.

Health and Training

Schedule a veterinary checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask about health screenings common to the breed. Positive reinforcement training and early socialization help every dog become a confident, well mannered companion.
