The Golden Retriever was developed in the Scottish Highlands in the 1800s by Lord Tweedmouth, who wanted a skilled bird retriever.

Goldens are gentle, friendly, and intelligent, with beautiful golden coats. They are popular family dogs and excel as therapy and guide dogs.

Care Tips

Brush several times a week and provide daily exercise and play. Goldens love retrieving games and swimming.

Fun Fact

Golden Retrievers often keep a puppy like playfulness well into their senior years.

Is This Breed Right for You?

Before bringing home any dog, think about your space, schedule, budget, and activity level. Meet the dog in person, ask about energy and grooming needs, and consider an adult dog whose personality is already known. Ohio shelters and breed rescues often have purebred dogs and loving mixes waiting for homes.

Health and Training

Schedule a veterinary checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask about health screenings common to the breed. Positive reinforcement training and early socialization help every dog become a confident, well mannered companion.
