USS Missouri was one of the last battleships built by the United States. On September 2, 1945, Japan formally surrendered on her deck in Tokyo Bay, ending World War II.

The ship later served in the Korean War, was modernized in the 1980s, and took part in the 1991 Gulf War.

Today the Battleship Missouri Memorial is a museum at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, near the USS Arizona Memorial.

Bookends of the War

Together the two ships mark the beginning and end of America’s role in the war in the Pacific.

See It in Person

Ohio is a great place to see military history up close. The National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton is free and displays hundreds of aircraft, and local veterans memorials, county historical societies, and VFW and American Legion posts across the state often display vehicles and artifacts. Thank a veteran when you visit.
