John Tyler served as the tenth President of the United States from 1841 to 1845. A Virginian born in 1790, he became the first vice president to take over the presidency after a president died in office.

Elected as a Whig, Tyler clashed with party leaders over a national bank, and most of his cabinet resigned in 1841. The Whigs then expelled him from the party.

Key Moments

Tyler insisted he was fully president, not an acting president, setting an important precedent for succession. Days before leaving office he signed the joint resolution to annex Texas.

Did You Know

Tyler had fifteen children, more than any other president. Late in life he was elected to the Confederate Congress but died in 1862 before taking his seat.
