George Washington served as the first President of the United States from 1789 to 1797. Born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, in 1732, he commanded the Continental Army during the American Revolution and later presided over the Constitutional Convention of 1787 in Philadelphia.

Washington belonged to no political party. Both times the Electoral College chose him unanimously, a record no other president has matched.

Key Moments

He set many lasting customs, including the title Mr. President, a cabinet of advisors, and the two term tradition. His Farewell Address of 1796 warned against political factions and permanent foreign alliances.

Washington is the only president who never lived in Washington, D.C. He retired to Mount Vernon, his Virginia estate, where he died in December 1799. Mount Vernon is open to visitors today.
