Severe bleeding can become life threatening in minutes, so act fast.

Call 911, then apply firm, direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or gauze. Do not lift it to check. Add more layers on top if blood soaks through.

Pin Tip

Take a Stop the Bleed class to learn wound packing and tourniquet use.

Tourniquets

For life threatening bleeding from an arm or leg that pressure cannot stop, a trained person can apply a tourniquet above the wound.

Get Trained

This pin is for general education only and does not replace hands on training. Take a certified CPR and first aid course from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association, and always call 911 in an emergency.
