Great Horned Owls are large, powerful owls with feathery ear tufts and bright yellow eyes. Their deep hooting is a classic nighttime sound.

They hunt mostly at night and eat a wide range of prey, from rabbits to rodents. They are among the earliest nesting birds in Ohio, often laying eggs in winter.

Where to See It

Woodlands, parks, and farm edges. Listen for their hoots on winter evenings.

Fun Fact

Great Horned Owls are one of the few predators willing to hunt skunks.
