Columbiana County was created in 1803, the same year Ohio became a state. Its name blends Columbus and Anna. The county seat, Lisbon, was founded in 1803 as New Lisbon.

Salem became a center of the antislavery movement and the Underground Railroad, and in 1850 it hosted Ohio’s first women’s rights convention.

Along the Ohio River, East Liverpool grew into the Pottery Capital of the World, with dozens of potteries producing dinnerware and ceramics in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
