Security officers can be armed or unarmed, depending on the risk level and the client’s needs.

Unarmed officers handle most access control, patrol and customer service roles. Armed officers are used where risks are higher, such as cash handling, high value assets or certain facilities.

Pin Tip

Choose armed security only after a risk assessment. More force is not always the right answer.

Extra Training

In Ohio, armed security officers must complete additional firearms training and qualification and be properly registered.

Security in Ohio

Security officers in Ohio must be registered through the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Private Investigator Security Guard Services office. Before hiring a security company, verify its license with the Ohio PISGS provider search.
