Cartridges are grouped by where the primer that ignites the powder is located.
Rimfire cartridges, such as the popular .22 Long Rifle, have the priming compound in the rim of the case. They are inexpensive, quiet and low recoil, making them ideal for learning. Centerfire cartridges have a primer in the center of the case base and are used in most hunting rifles, pistols and shotguns.
Pin Tip
Use only the exact cartridge marked on your firearm. Similar sounding cartridges are not interchangeable.
Start Small
Many instructors recommend beginning with a .22 rimfire to build good habits before moving to larger calibers.
Safety and Training
New owners should take a certified firearm safety course, buy only from a federally licensed dealer and check current state and local laws before buying, carrying or transporting any firearm. Local ranges and hunter education programs are great places to learn safely.
