A revolver holds its cartridges in a rotating cylinder, usually with five to eight chambers.
Each pull of the trigger, or cock of the hammer, turns the cylinder to line up the next chamber. In a single action revolver the hammer must be cocked by hand before each shot, while a double action revolver can also cock and fire with one longer trigger pull. Their simple design makes them easy to understand and check.
Pin Tip
Always open the cylinder and visually confirm every chamber is empty before cleaning or handing a revolver to someone.
Pros and Trade Offs
Revolvers are dependable and simple to operate, but they hold fewer rounds and are slower to reload than most pistols.
Safety and Training
New owners should take a certified firearm safety course, buy only from a federally licensed dealer and check current state and local laws before buying, carrying or transporting any firearm. Local ranges and hunter education programs are great places to learn safely.
