The Rottweiler descends from Roman drover dogs and was developed in the German town of Rottweil to herd cattle and pull carts of meat.

Rotties are powerful, loyal, and protective. Well trained Rottweilers are calm and devoted family dogs.

Care Tips

Early socialization and consistent training are essential. They need daily exercise and a job to do.

Fun Fact

Rottweilers were once called butcher’s dogs because they guarded money purses tied to their collars.

Is This Breed Right for You?

Before bringing home any dog, think about your space, schedule, budget, and activity level. Meet the dog in person, ask about energy and grooming needs, and consider an adult dog whose personality is already known. Ohio shelters and breed rescues often have purebred dogs and loving mixes waiting for homes.

Health and Training

Schedule a veterinary checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask about health screenings common to the breed. Positive reinforcement training and early socialization help every dog become a confident, well mannered companion.
