The American Wirehair began in 1966 with a kitten born on a farm in Verona, New York, with a crimped, springy coat caused by a natural mutation.
The coarse, wiry fur feels a bit like steel wool. Wirehairs are calm, adaptable cats that enjoy company without being demanding.
Care Tips
Avoid overbrushing, which can damage the coat. Some Wirehairs have oily skin and benefit from an occasional bath.
Fun Fact
The American Wirehair is one of the rarest breeds recognized by the Cat Fanciers’ Association.
Is This Breed Right for You?
Every cat is an individual, so meet the cat before you decide. Think about your schedule, grooming time, other pets, and children in the home. Breed rescues and Ohio shelters often have purebred and mixed breed cats waiting for homes, and adult cats come with personalities you can see right away.
Health Basics
Schedule a checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask your veterinarian about health issues common to the breed. Responsible breeders should share health screening results and welcome your questions.
