After President Lincoln was assassinated in April 1865, a funeral train carried his body about 1,600 miles from Washington to Springfield, Illinois, largely retracing his 1861 route to his inauguration.
Millions of Americans lined the tracks or attended ceremonies in major cities along the way.
Ohio Connection
The train stopped in Cleveland, where a special pavilion was built on Public Square, and in Columbus, where Lincoln lay in state in the Ohio Statehouse rotunda.
Final Rest
Lincoln was buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield on May 4, 1865.
