On April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant at the McLean House in Appomattox Court House, Virginia.
Grant offered generous terms. Confederate soldiers could go home and keep their horses for spring planting, and officers kept their side arms.
Not Quite Over
Other Confederate forces surrendered over the following weeks, but Appomattox is remembered as the effective end of the war.
